In 2016, an 85-acre property was listed for sale in Passadumkeag, Maine. The land – a traditional meeting ground and harvesting place for red ochre by the Wabanaki and their ancestors, the Red Paint People – is the last access point to Olamon Island, the original residential village of the Penobscot Nation and essential to traditional activities such as gathering medicines, fasting, and ceremony.
Nibezun was formed when a small group of tribal members and allies came together to purchase this sacred land, protecting it for the healing of all people and the next seven generations. Today we celebrate culture as medicine, provide an inclusive space for healing, and promote sustainability for all people and future generations.

Our mission is to promote Indigenous foodways education and facilitate Indigenous food access.
Not Our Native Daughters is dedicated to ending the trafficking, exploitation, and murder of Indigenous Persons. Through education, policy change, coalition-building, and community empowerment, we work tirelessly to combat endemic violence. Our vision is a world where Indigenous women and girls no longer endure the highest rates of violence. With a commitment to cultural preservation and advocacy, we strive to create lasting change, providing resources, support, and opportunities. We work closely with tribal communities, offer support to families impacted by MMIP (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons), and conduct trainings to empower individuals and foster a more just and equitable society. Together, we address this critical issue and advocate for Indigenous rights.
The Oceti Sakowin Community Academy (OSCA) aims to challenge the status quo of the Westernized approach to education by creating opportunities for Indigenous students to experience an enriching learning environment that is inclusive of who they are linguistically and culturally. OSCA is a dual-language learning institution providing instruction in both English and Lakota languages.
The educational philosophy of OSCA is grounded in the understanding and ancestral teachings of the Oceti Sakowin culture. Given educational instruction that is both culturally relevant and responsive, along with the ability to see their experiences represented and honored in the classroom, Indigenous students can self-actualize in ways that mainstream education often inhibits. This approach celebrates the unique experiences and strength of Indigenous learners and lead to improved academic outcomes, holistic wellness, strong cultural identities, and confidence for success in post-high school pathways.
Oúŋ has thoughtfully offered our community members high quality experiences through centering indigenous people in community events, by organizing community actions, hosting artist workshops, integrating language and culture, creating revenue opportunities for artists, supporting place inspired projects, provided consultation to ally organizations, collaborated with Tribal programs to maximize support for our community members, and we have facilitated dialogue around important community issues.
